Dear Families,

What an incredible week we’ve had at Hedke! We kicked off Reading Month with an exciting Book Bingo event—huge thanks to our amazing PTO for making it such a success! Students also brought home Reading Bingo cards to complete for a chance to win a bike or gift card. There will be two winners per grade level! The bikes have been generously donated courtesy of the Trenton Masons—we truly appreciate their support!

Meanwhile, our March Madness Book Bracket challenge is in full swing! Stay tuned to see which books will advance to the Elite 8 next week.

Arrival & Dismissal Safety Reminders

Please ensure you are doing your part to make our arrival and dismissal safe, smooth, and efficient. As a reminder, the following protocols are in place:

📌 Unless you are a Care Club or DHH family, please do not use the parking lot for dropping off or picking up students. We need to ensure the safety of our bus riders as they load and unload.
📌 Parking or waiting in the bus lane is not permitted from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. for Care Club or DHH parents in order to leave a clear lane for the buses—please use a parking spot or pull all the way forward past the dumpsters if you are a Care Club or DHH family. New signs will be installed next week clearly indicating no parking or standing zones in the bus lane to reinforce this.
📌 Parking or standing on the school side of Marian is not permitted. The school side is a drop-and-go only zone—please adhere to this for student safety.
📌 Parking and standing are permitted on the home side of Marian.
📌 Drive with caution around the school building during arrival and dismissal to ensure student safety.
📌 Please do not drop students off unsupervised before 8:15 a.m.
📌 Students eating breakfast can be dropped off on Marian near the main entrance and walk to the breakfast doors starting at 8:10 a.m.

I know this is a lot of information about what cannot be done during arrival and dismissal, but it’s all in place to keep everyone safe. We truly appreciate your help in making our school a safe place for all! Here is the traffic flow map for you to refer to again outlining our drop off and pick up areas. 🚗🚸

Please mark your calendars for three upcoming events, our Dine to Donate at Bubba’s 33 on 3/11/25 to help raise money for field trips, the Get Involved Fair & Open House on 3/13/25, and a 5th grade bottle drive on 3/15/25 to help raise funds to offset the cost of the 5th grade farewell party.

Dear Hedke Families,

This week, we have a very exciting announcement to highlight and share with our families!

We are thrilled to announce that we will soon have a certified therapy dog onsite with us daily! Lexie, our friendly and specially trained therapy dog, will be joining the Hedke community, and we can’t wait for our students to experience the many benefits she brings. Lexie’s handler, Ms. Pratt, one of our DHH teachers, will be coordinating her visits with classrooms and students.

Therapy dogs have been shown to provide numerous benefits to students, including:
🐾 Reducing stress and anxiety
🐾 Encouraging social and emotional growth
🐾 Improving focus and motivation
🐾 Supporting a positive and welcoming school environment

Lexie will be at Hedke for a half-day each day, and teachers will work with Ms. Pratt to schedule interactions with her for students and classrooms. Before Lexie officially makes Hedke her second home, we will host a special kickoff assembly using this presentation designed to introduce students to her and explain her role in our school.

We do want to be mindful of families who may prefer their child not to interact with our therapy dog. An opt-out form is coming home today for any family that wishes to decline participation. Please complete and return this form if needed by the end of next week.

We are so excited to welcome Lexie to Hedke and look forward to the positive impact she will have on our students!

Be sure to check out the recent Hedke Highlights and important dates to remember below. You can find additional news from our PBIS team and PTO, along with links to register for flag football, Super Kids Day, and ordering your yearbook here.

Today we celebrated our January Student of the Month recipients. These bulldogs serve as “upstanders” in our school community working to ensure we are safe, respectful, responsible and that all of our students feel valued. Way to go, Bulldogs!

In science, first grade has been exploring how vibrations create sound & how we hear. Students asked great questions about how their friends with hearing loss are able to hear sounds. Dr. Sanders helped students build ear models & explained sound waves. She’ll visit a 2nd-grade class soon for a similar demonstration!

3rd grade students created mathematical arguments using pictures, words and numbers and then examined and discussed the arguments of others as they work to solve multiplication and division problems accurately.

Our first graders are planning and writing their very own opinion books. They have been hard at work as authors and illustrators of these!

January 17, 2025

Dear Families,

Please take a moment to review the following important announcements, reminders and updates.

  • Join me for Coffee and Conversation on 1/22/25 at 9:00 a.m. in the Hedke Library.
  • Please drop by and check the lost and found for items your child is missing.
  • If you need to pick up your child early, please note that we will call them out of class upon your arrival to ensure minimal disruption to learning.
  • As winter temperatures are upon us, please ensure your child is packed with warm clothing for outdoor recess (we will go outside in temperatures above 17°F). In addition, it is a good idea to keep a change of clothing in your child’s bag at all times in the event they are needed.
  • If you’d like at-home COVID tests, please reach out to the office, as we have some available to send home.

We’re thrilled to announce that Hedke has been selected as the School of the Game at an upcoming Red Wings game! Due to the excitement around this family night, ticket order forms will be sent home next week. Keep an eye out!

Be sure to check out the recent Hedke Highlights and important dates to remember below. You can find additional news from Downriver ASYO soccer, PTO regarding upcoming events, how to access free or reduced internet access and community events here.

Should you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out via email at eatone@trentonschools.com, by phone, or through Parent Square.

Sincerely,

Erin Eaton
Principal, Hedke Elementary School
